POLIJE STUDENTS TRANSFORM DURIAN PEEL WASTE INTO ECO-FRIENDLY INNOVATIONS

A team of students from Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije), known as the Albariopreuner team, has developed an eco-friendly innovation by utilizing durian peel waste. Through the Student Creativity Program (PKM), they have processed durian peels into charcoal briquettes, providing an alternative fuel source for the local community. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers economic benefits to the residents of Rowosari Village.

Durian peels, often discarded as waste, have been repurposed by the students into briquettes that serve as a sustainable energy source. These briquettes are not only environmentally friendly but also help reduce air pollution by minimizing open burning practices. The project demonstrates how agricultural waste can be transformed into valuable products, contributing to both environmental conservation and community welfare.

The Albariopreuner team collaborated with the local women’s group (PKK) in Rowosari Village to implement this project. The women received training on waste management and briquette production, enabling them to generate additional income for their families. This collaboration not only empowers the local community but also ensures the sustainability of the initiative.

The success of this project has garnered attention from local authorities, who hope it can serve as a model for other villages in managing agricultural waste effectively. By converting waste into economically valuable products, the initiative aligns with broader goals of sustainable development and community empowerment.

Beyond briquette production, the students have also explored the potential of durian peel waste in other applications. Research conducted at Polije has investigated the isolation of cellulose from durian peels for use in biodegradable packaging materials. Such innovations highlight the versatility of agricultural waste and its potential in various industries.

The Albariopreuner team’s initiative reflects Polije’s commitment to fostering practical solutions to real-world problems through student-led projects. By integrating academic knowledge with community engagement, the institution encourages students to develop innovations that have tangible impacts on society and the environment.

As the project continues to evolve, the team plans to expand its reach by involving more community members and exploring additional uses for durian peel waste. Through such efforts, they aim to promote sustainable practices and contribute to the development of a circular economy in the region. (rda)
