Polije Strengthens Ice Tube Production Quality in Jember Through SOP Implementation

The quality of crystal ice production in Jember has improved significantly thanks to a collaboration between Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) through its Teaching Factory (TeFa) Ice Tube and UD Frozen Ice. This partnership focuses on implementing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure product quality and safety.

Team leader Mohammad Mardiyanto, S.TP., M.P., highlighted the importance of applying written SOPs in the crystal ice industry. He noted that although UD Frozen Ice has produced consumable ice, it previously lacked a structured guideline for water filtration system maintenance.

“The replacement of filters, RO membranes, or UV lamps was based only on assumptions and workers’ experience. In fact, water as the main raw material must be guaranteed safe,” he explained.

Through this program, the TeFa Ice Tube team at Polije developed a detailed SOP covering filter replacement, RO and UV sterilizer maintenance, and backwash procedures. The SOP was designed after field observations, critical point identification, and practical trials, ensuring it could be easily applied by operators.

Beyond documentation, the SOP was internalized through intensive training sessions. Production operators practiced technical simulations, learned about sanitation risks, and used daily supervision checklists.

“With proper quality standards, consumer health will be safeguarded, and the local crystal ice industry can become more competitive,” added Mardiyanto.

This initiative is expected to boost the competitiveness of Jember’s crystal ice products in the national market while ensuring consistent quality for consumers.
