Polije Empowers Dairy Farmers in Jember with Yoghurt and Biogas Training

Lecturers and students from Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije), Indonesia, have carried out a community service program at UD Dulur Lanang, a local dairy farm in Curahlele Village, Balung District. The event gathered farm owners and local residents in an engaging, hands-on training session aimed at adding value to dairy products and promoting sustainable energy.

UD Dulur Lanang, known for supplying fresh milk to Jember residents, became the center of innovation during the program. Participants learned how to process fresh cow’s milk into yoghurt with high market value, while also turning cattle waste into eco-friendly biogas. “Farm waste, often seen as a problem, can actually become an opportunity if managed properly. Yoghurt also offers high nutritional value and business potential,” said Niati Ningsih, S.Pt., M.Sc., one of the program leaders.

The training included practical demonstrations led by Aryanti Candra Dewi, S.Pt., M.Sc., who guided participants through pasteurization and fermentation techniques. Meanwhile, Zeni Ulma, S.St., M.Eng., explained how a 110-liter biodigester can generate alternative energy from cow manure, reducing pollution and supporting household energy needs.

The enthusiasm of participants was evident during the discussion sessions, with questions ranging from yoghurt storage and child safety to business prospects. Dr. Ir. Rr. Merry Muspita Dyah Utami emphasized that yoghurt is safe for all ages and has strong potential as a small-scale enterprise. The program concluded with branding and product labeling training to help participants prepare their products for the market.

Through this initiative, Polije demonstrates its commitment to empowering rural communities by fostering entrepreneurship and sustainability. The program is expected to inspire new small businesses in Curahlele while strengthening the local economy through dairy innovation and renewable energy solutions.
