Polije Empowers Crackers Business in Nganjuk with Technology and Digital Marketing

The Community Service Team of Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) carried out a program to empower the “MJT” onion crackers business group in Siwalan Village, Nganjuk, on September 10, 2025. The initiative introduced appropriate technology and digital marketing strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of local MSMEs in the modern era.

The program addressed several challenges faced by the business, including dependence on weather for drying, unattractive packaging, and limited local-level marketing. As a solution, Polije introduced the use of dehydrator machines, improved packaging designs, and training in digital promotion to create a more sustainable business model.

“Drying has always been affected by weather conditions. The dehydrator will boost efficiency and improve product quality,” explained lecturer Fitri Krismiratsih.

Beyond technology, the team emphasized the importance of digital marketing. Lecturer Ika Puspitasari Dyah Rahmadhani noted that visual-based promotion is key to expanding markets.

“We want MSMEs not only to focus on production but also to compete through online promotion. Attractive product visuals can open access to wider markets, both locally and regionally,” she said.

The impact was immediately felt by Mujiatun, the owner of MJT crackers. “With the dehydrator, we can produce anytime without relying on the sun. The product photography training also helps us promote our crackers online with more appealing visuals,” she shared. She hopes that continuous support from Polije will further grow her business and create new job opportunities in the village.

This initiative reflects global trends where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to adopt technology and e-commerce to survive and grow. According to the International Trade Centre (ITC), digitalization enables SMEs to access cross-border markets and increase resilience against climate-related challenges. By equipping local businesses with both innovation and marketing strategies, Polije’s program strengthens rural entrepreneurship while aligning with international efforts to build inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
