A new milestone in international academic collaboration was achieved on August 13, 2025, as Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) and Kyungpook National University (KNU), South Korea, officially launched the groundbreaking of the Software Education AI and Art-Science Lab at the Department of Information Technology. This initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening research, education, and innovation in artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary studies.
The ceremony was attended by academic leaders, lecturers, and staff of Polije, along with representatives from KNU. The groundbreaking event symbolized the strong partnership between the two institutions and their shared commitment to advancing technological education that responds to the needs of the digital era. Both sides expressed optimism that the new lab will provide students and researchers with greater opportunities to explore the intersection of AI, software development, and art-science innovation.
In his remarks, a Polije representative highlighted the importance of collaboration with KNU as part of Polije’s vision to become a globally recognized polytechnic. He emphasized that the establishment of the AI and Art-Science Lab is not only about facilities but also about fostering creativity, critical thinking, and global competencies among students.
From the KNU side, the delegation conveyed their excitement about working with Polije in developing innovative research and student projects. They noted that AI and interdisciplinary education are crucial for preparing the next generation of global leaders in technology, and that this lab will become a hub for collaboration not only between the two institutions but also with industry partners in the future.
The lab is designed to serve multiple functions, ranging from AI-based software development, data science research, and creative digital arts to applied projects in smart city and smart agriculture. By combining art and science, the facility is expected to encourage innovative problem-solving and open up new perspectives in technology application for society.
For students, the AI and Art-Science Lab will be a learning space that integrates hands-on practice with research-based education. It will also serve as a platform for joint student projects between Polije and KNU, allowing cross-cultural teamwork that strengthens both academic skills and intercultural understanding.
The groundbreaking also represents a continuation of the long-term cooperation between Polije and KNU through the World Friends Korea – ICT (WFK-ICT) program. The establishment of this lab ensures that the outcomes of the volunteer program can be sustained through a concrete facility that benefits both current and future generations of students.
As the collaboration progresses, both institutions plan to expand the scope of the lab by involving more international researchers, hosting joint conferences, and publishing collaborative research. This initiative demonstrates how academic partnerships can evolve into impactful innovations that not only benefit the campus but also contribute to society at large.
With the launch of the Software Education AI and Art-Science Lab, Polije and KNU have set a strong foundation for future innovation. The groundbreaking reflects a shared vision of empowering students with cutting-edge knowledge, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, and preparing graduates to thrive in the global digital economy.
