Ismawati Hasanah, an alumnus of the Food Industry Technology Study Program, Department of Agricultural Technology, Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) class of 2014, is now successfully managing CV Adis Barokah Jaya in Pasuruan. Her business focuses on processing waste, especially non-economic waste such as plastic and household waste, into valuable products.
“I built this business from waste, from the waste problem in the community. Thanks to the support of the Environmental Agency and business partners, we managed to develop a business that now plays an important role in the destruction of waste,” said Ismawati.
CV Adis Barokah Jaya has several divisions, including the waste destruction division, the production of drinking water “Kahuripan,” and the processing of plastic waste into pellets, the raw material for plastic bottle production. One of the innovations implemented by Ismawati is the utilization of ash from burning waste as a material for paving and patako production.
“We use ash from burning waste as a raw material that is safer than ordinary ash. The impact is very positive for the environment and society,” she explained.
Ismawati chose Surabaya as the center for waste processing and product distribution, especially for areas outside Java.
“We chose Surabaya because of its easier and more efficient transportation access for product distribution. Surabaya also produces a large amount of waste, making it suitable for our business development,” Ismawati explained.
Although they have received a lot of support, challenges still arise, especially in introducing safe waste destruction methods to the public.
“The challenge is more about people’s perception. They think that waste treatment plants are a source of odor, disease, and flies. However, the technology we use is very safe and has no negative impact on the environment,” said Ismawati.
In addition to waste processing, Ismawati also actively supports MSME players in Pasuruan by providing containers and product marketing opportunities, including in tourist attractions such as Taman Ria Suropati.
“We want to help MSMEs so that their products can be recognized more widely. This is one of our contributions to society,” she said.
Not only that, Ismawati established the At-Taufiq Foundation in Surabaya which houses Quran memorizers and students. This foundation is funded by the proceeds of CV Adis Barokah Jaya.
“Waste is a blessing for us. From the proceeds of waste processing, we can establish a foundation that provides free religious education for students,” she said.
As a successful entrepreneur, Ismawati also provides motivation for the younger generation, especially her classmates at Jember State Polytechnic. She emphasized the importance of parents’ prayers and teachers’ blessings as the key to success.
“Success is not just about high GPA or academic achievement. It is the prayers of parents and the blessings of teachers that make us successful in this world and the hereafter,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of persistence in entrepreneurship to become a successful entrepreneur.
“Don’t be afraid of entrepreneurship. Failure is part of the journey to success. I myself am not the best graduate, but thanks to my parents’ prayers and tireless efforts, I can be where I am now. Failure is the beginning of success. Don’t give up, because in the business world, profit and loss are part of the business game,” Ismawati concluded. (rda)
